The ABC’s of Death and The Pact

ABC’s of Death and The Pact

The original plan for this week was to watch the ABC’s of death. As soon as I turned it on, I realized it was ANOTHER movie with subtitle. I decided to give it a try since I really wanted to stick with my original list and the idea seemed interesting. The film, which was over 2 hours long, consisted of 26 short films. Each director was given a different letter of the alphabet and had to create a way to die that started with that letter. The directors were from 15 different countries and the film was released in 2012.

My first mistake was making breakfast before starting the movie. Within 30 seconds of it starting, a woman was stabbing a man and sliced his hand open. I was no longer in the mood for breakfast. I only got to the letter “D” before I turned the movie off. D stood for dog fighting and that was something I refused to watch. Instead of only writing about the first 20 minutes of a movie that I hated, I decided to watch The Pact.

The Pact was released in 2012 as well but did not have subtitles. It started with a woman, Nicole, cleaning her mother’s house and preparing for her funeral. She calls her sister Annie to help but between the time of the phone call and the time Annie arrives, Nicole goes missing. At first, everyone believes Nicole has run away but when Annie begins to experience paranormal activity in the home, she changes her mind. Annie then sets out to not only locate her sister but also find out what the old house is hiding.

I actually ended up enjoying this movie more than I thought I would. The beginning was a little slow and some of the acting was less than stellar but I was definitely freaked out and left wondering what would happen next. It wasn’t overly gory and had a paranormal element that was interesting. There was a huge twist at the end that caught me off guard. Although skeptical at first, I would give this movie a 7 out of 10 and recommend it to someone that enjoys a mystery.

The Orphanage

This week I watched The Orphanage. The movie was released May 20, 2007 by Picturehouse and was directed by J. A. Bayona. The Orphanage is a Spanish film that was released in the United States with English subtitles. Overall, the movie was okay but not something I would recommend to a friend. Having to watch the movie with subtitles was somewhat distracting and at some points I had to re-watch scenes because I missed what they were saying while watching or vice versa. Other than that, I didn’t think the movie was that original. You could figure out what was going to happen long before it actually happened and it moved too slowly at points. The scariest part of this movie was the children. Not only were they dead but also they were running through a haunted house. At one point, a bus hits a woman and they show her body, which was extremely hard to watch. That was the most gruesome part of the movie though. The main characters, a woman and her husband, were somewhat annoying and seemed very dramatic at random times while oddly calm at others. The most interesting character is the son that goes missing early on. If they had shown more of what happened to him while he was missing the movie might have been more interesting. I would rate this movie 5 out of 10. It lost my attention at some points and I would not recommend it or watch it again but it was far from the worst horror movie I have seen.

Horror Movies

As long as I can remember, I have had a fascination with horror movies. This would come as a surprise to most people considering I am 21 years old, sleep with a night-light, and hate being home alone, but it’s true. I have always gotten an adrenalin rush from being truly frightened. Even though I know I will have trouble sleeping, I seek out opportunities to scare myself as much as possible. As I am sure you can imagine at this point, Halloween is my favorite time of year. While I do love the colder weather, the leaves changing and of course, the start of the hockey season (go flyers), I live for the haunted houses, corn mazes, hay rides, and abundance of new horror films.

This may seem weird to some people and I started to wonder why I love scaring myself, while others refuse to sit through a scary movie. I was able to find something called the excitation transfer process. According to Glenn Sparks, Ph.D, it is because of how some people feel after the movie. During a horror film, an individual’s heart rate rises as well are there blood pressure and respiration. Even after the film is over a psychological arousal is present and intensifies the emotion you feel after. Therefore, if you were to watch a horror film and then go out to dinner with friends and have fun, you would unknowingly associate that fun feeling with horror movies. In contrast, if you were to watch a horror film and get bad news later that day, that sadness would be intensified and associated with horror movies in the future.

As I’m sure some of you do, I have a collection of go to horror movies when someone asks for some of my favorites but I wanted to expand on that list instead of re-watching my favorites. Over the years, I have realized that I tend to stay away from the classic gory horror film and enjoy psychological or paranormal horror films. Some of my favorites are The Shinning, Silence of the Lambs, The Conjuring and The Amityville Horror. After looking through lists and lists of the “best” horror films, I have compiled a list of 15 horror movies that I have never seen before or don’t remember. These movies range in both subgenre and the year they were made, spanning from 1973 to 2012. Throughout the semester, I will be watching these movies and sharing my thoughts both positive and negative. Although I am sure there will be movies I dislike I am hoping to possibly take away a new favorite from this experience.
